Our perception of time is deeply personal, inconsistent and subjective, yet socially and historically, the universal routinization of time to a space would have us believe that it has a coherent structure that smoothly elapses from one point to another. It would appear that it always points forward. Yet again, when we face the immensity of the sea, the past, the present and the future is experienced as coexistent: the rise and fall of the waves in an endless rotation serves as a model for this coexistence, but there can be no universal ‘now.’ It begs the question, what is time, if it entirely is not an illusion, and compels us to reconsider how we perceive it.
